Steel plate sugar lift Intaglio printed on Hahnemuhle rag paper - 1996

This is a sugar lift etching with intaglio and aquatint; a second etching of my father. As a self-nominated heathen, my father knew most of the psalms and this one was the best for the time of his death. The words of the first part of the psalm are written on the person and also on the seas. The second part of the psalm - with all the retribution, etcetera - is left out. Sugar lift is a technique developed in the early 20th century. It is done by drawing with a saturated sugar solution which gives particular shapes and edges. The dried drawing is covered with bitumen and, when that is set, the plate is soaked in water and the drawn areas lift out. The plate is then aquatinted. The intaglio lines and words go on top. This plate is printed à la poupée – dabbed separate colours on one plate; a complex, smelly, inverted process (happily).
