The title comes from T.S. Eliot's East Coker from there four quartets. My father knew this poem so I remember hearing it in my childhood. The etching is about part of my growing-up, the visits to my city grandmother. I am sitting on her rickety knees, learning to knit. The buildings around are that time of Adelaide, many now gone. We often travelled past them as we went by tram or train ti visit her bridge playing friends. The details are about my grandmother, my parents, visiting the Etruscan sarcophagae at the Art Gallery of South Australia with my father, meeting with my grandmother's headmistress in King William Street (Howe is your sister, Miss Dobbs?" "Dead - thank God>"). Early events in banking "do you require more ink?". Of Kangaroo Island, letters home, plants, lists of pasture grasses, strange clothes to civilise a feral child, me leaving on a DC3 aeroplane. My Weetbix card and stamp collections, memories of plovers, beaches and homelands. The technique - à la poupée inking on steel plate.
